This is a list of links I subscribe to- they cover finance, investing, history, economics and politics. Some I pay for as noted. Others are free. Some may be of interest to you.
Forest For the Trees is a Friday publication that offers, in 25 or so pages, “The 10 Most Interesting Things We’ve Read Recently.” It combines macroeconomics, finance, international dynamics and government finance to make interesting speculations and reach some surprising conclusions. Not light reading, but very valuable to me. Follow the author, Luke Gromen, on X. Now the bad news. It’s $97 a month. I got lucky and subscribed when it was $90 a year.
Geopolitical Futures was founded and is headed by George Friedman. George, the founder and former CEO of Stratfor, is a well-known geopolitical strategist with an eye-opening approach to history and world events. You’ll find one or more of his books on my suggested reading list. Presently you can get a one year subscription for $79 or $9 month. You might try it. 30 day money back guarantee! You’ll get his daily summary of what’s going on in the world as well as more detailed articles from other analysts.
Mauldin Economics was started by John Mauldin. I’ve followed and read him for over 20 years. His weekly “Thoughts from the Front Line” newsletter is free. He provides a great perspective from what I can only assume is an amazing contacts list. Complicated topics in economics and investing are simplified.
Wolf Street: The Stories Behind Business, Finance and Money, provides a more or less daily article on all kinds of business topics with information and a slant you may not have considered. Good data. It’s free, though occasionally he’ll ask for a donation. Click on the link just to see if the topics interest you.
Myrmikan Capital is a New York-based investment firm that specializes in managing investments and assets, primarily for high-net-worth individuals and institutions. Sadly, Diane and I don’t qualify to be clients. But if you go to the link and page down, you’ll find a list of free monthly articles I highly recommend. You can sign up to be notified when a new one becomes available. Try the latest one and see what you think.
Situational Awareness is a link to a summary on how smart people see AI developing. You can just read the summary in about three minutes, or you can click through to the 165 page PDF for all the detail. It’s free. The summary is as far as I’ve gotten.
Hussman Funds is an investment management firm started by John Hussman. The articles are free. They are deep dives on long term investing. John believes, and I think makes a strong case, for poor returns in the stock market over the next 10 years due to current valuations. History says he’s right. Will this time be different?
Doomberg is written by the Green Chicken and perhaps some other chickens as well. His actual name seems to be a secret. He takes on and demolishes in simple logical terms outright absurdities about energy and how we are dealing with our need for it. You can get a free trial that allows you to see five articles for free. At least read one. After that, it’s $300 a year. Pay it.
