That’s the title of a scroll through presentation by the Financial Times. It shows and discusses the growth, and projected growth, of data centers. Talks about the energy needs and cooling requirements (resulting in more energy needs) and some of the solutions big players are pursuing. Here’s the link. You probably thought, like I did, that you understood the magnitude of what’s happening. They are building without a clear picture of how much is going to be needed or how they will make profit on it. Feels like the competition to build railroads in the 19th century, or fiber optic capacity in the 1970s-80s or web sites at the end of the 20th century. My take? We’ll figure out how to make use of it, but some people are going to get unbelievably rich and others are going to go bust in a big way.
